Everything parents want to know about the Jr. Wolverines - youth football and cheer in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Is youth tackle football safe?
Safety is our top priority. Our football players wear top rated helmets, with 5-star safety ratings from Virginia Tech’s independent Helmet Lab - the highest rating available for youth football helmets. Five stars means a meaningful reduction in concussion risk compared to lower-rated options. Our coaches are trained in heads-up tackling technique, modern practice management, concussion recognition, and combine with our practice protocols minimize the risk of injury.
How much does it cost to join the Jr. Wolverines?
Football registration is $400 and cheer registration is $300, both including the uniform. There is a $150 family equipment deposit, which is fully refunded at season end when equipment is returned and your family has volunteered at least four times. A $50 sibling discount applies for each additional child. Financial aid scholarships are available - please apply before letting cost be the deciding factor.
Does my child need prior experience?
No experience is required for either football or cheer. Many of our players and cheerleaders join with no prior experience and thrive. Our coaches develop athletes at every level.
What ages can participate?
Football is open to boys and girls in grades 2-8 (ages 8-14). Cheer is open to athletes in grades K-8 (ages 5-14).
When does the 2026 season start?
The 2026 season begins in August. Preseason practice runs five days per week. Once the regular season begins, we practice three to four times per week, with games on Saturdays.
Where do you practice?
We practice at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
When is registration open?
Returning athlete registration opens March 1, 2026. New athlete registration opens March 15, 2026. We encourage early registration as spots are limited.
What documents do I need to register?
You’ll need: (1) a physical exam dated January 1, 2026 or later; (2) a photo of a parent or guardian’s ID; and (3) a copy of your child’s birth certificate. Documents can be uploaded during registration or emailed to wjbw.registrar@gmail.com.
What league do you compete in?
The Jr. Wolverines compete in the Kensington Valley Youth Football Conference (KVYFC), one of Michigan’s premier youth football leagues. The regular season is four home games and four away games, with playoffs in October.
What is the time commitment for parents?
Each family is expected to volunteer at least four times during the season. In-season, plan for three weekday practices plus Saturday games. Preseason in August is five practice days per week. TeamSnap is used for all scheduling and communication.
Is financial aid available?
Yes. We offer financial aid scholarships for families who need assistance. Applications are reviewed confidentially. We believe every child who wants to play should have that opportunity - please reach out before letting cost be the deciding factor.
Is this the same program Jim Harbaugh played in?
Yes - Jim Harbaugh and John Harbaugh both played youth football in Ann Arbor as kids, for Ann Arbor Junior Football, then called the Junior Packers. Jim Harbaugh has said: “Junior Football in Ann Arbor was where it all began for me.” That same community tradition continues today with the Jr. Wolverines.
